Brazilian hair straightening can be deadly Miami New Times
Andressa is a perky traveling beautician who specializes in Brazilian hair straightening. Sure, she uses formaldehyde — found in embalming fluid — to make curls straight as straw. And, yeah, inhaling the stuff causes nasal cancer in rats, but she's good at calming skittish new clients. "The fumes actually smell really good," she assures. "It only hurts your eyes a little."
In Miami-Dade, Andressa makes most of her trips to the homes of Hispanic and Jewish women. Her regulars pay about $150, just a fraction of what it costs professionally. She calls the procedure "Brazilian keratin treatment."
The only problem: It's illegal outside the walls of a salon. It also poses potentially serious health risks. In March 2007, a 33-year-old woman from Brazil died after leaving the treatment on her scalp for four days.
In the past month, "stylists" have posted 14 ads for the service on the South Florida section of Craigslist . They offer to perform it in kitchens and sell packages of the formula from their garages.

Chemical Straightening?
My hair is curly and if i let it air dry it gets extremely poofy. Will Chemical Straightening help this alot or will it make it worse? I straighten my hair every morning and it is a little damaged. How much does this cost?
My friend got this chemical staigtening and it worked well for her. Her hair was wavy though. It costed about $30 at some retail store. I bet it would work on you, it is worth a shot.
Just make sure you go to a good hair dresser.
Do NOT get it done at WalMart, mkay?
You can permanently straighten your hair to some extent by using perm solution and neutraliser as you would with a perm, but combing it straight while it develops instead of putting rollers in.
You can also buy a straightening thingybob from Boots as well, and presumably other places, I just haven't really paid much attention.
It all damages your hair though, because the solutions have to break the bonds in your hair and then repair them in a different pattern. It's never gonna be easy on your hair.
I would have thought chemically straightening would be slightly less damaging than the method using perm solution because your hair's very fragile while the perm solution's on, due to it breaking the bonds; you would probably get a lot of breakage, but buying a DIY perming kit would probably be cheaper than chemical straightening or a straightening kit thing.
If you get a really intense conditioner it should help the poofyness.
When you say air dry do you mean you let it dry naturally or using a hairdryer?
Try drying it in a different way, my hair dries a lot differently using a hairdryer to it does naturally.
The ladies at the shop were super. They straightened her hair and she felt like a queen. She didn't have any poofy hair. They told me that her hair should have been straightened much sooner. She has been back several times since.
It is permanent and she has to have it done every so often. She did go a white person once and she didn't like it at all. The lady made her hair poofy and it just didn't lay right once we were home doing it on our own.
I finally got brave and I buy "Pink" and do it myself. It's about $8.00 at any store. To have it done in a shop is any where from $50 and up.
where can i get a chemical straightening kit and for how much?
Where can i get a chemical hair straightening kit and for how much money. I have curly, caucasian hair, that i want to be wavy. Im pretty sure a straightening kit wil help with this, i have tried everything, so im just gona give this a sht too. Please answer soon, and if anyone wants to share their personal experiences with a chemical straightening kit, please tell me. Thanks alot.
You can buy them at the grocery store in the hair color section for probably about $20. I bought one once but never used it because you need another person to help you and no one would. So find a trustworthy friend who'll do it with you!
what are the consequences of chemical straightening on curly hair?
I have really curly and extremely frizzy hair and i was wondering if there would be negative effects if i get a chemical straightening done on my hair.
Also, i have heard that there is also something called a chemical relaxer, and I was wondering what is the difference between the two, and which would be better.
Relaxers are less damaging and will just make your hair wavy. Permanent straightening is super damaging and lasts for about 6 months, at which time your hair will start to grow back in curly. It also costs about $200. In my opinion it's really not worth it when you could learn how to wear your curls naturally!
Here are some basic tips for curly hair that you might find helpful:
*Try to find a stylist who knows how to work with curly hair. You can find ratings by region here: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlsalons
*Don't shampoo every day.
*Comb conditioner through hair in the shower.
*Never use a brush, only a comb, or better yet fingers, when wet.
*Apply styling products to dripping wet hair
*Use styling products suited for your hair type. Don’t know yours? http://www.naturallycurly.com/hair-types
*Avoid terrycloth towels; use microfiber or tshirts instead.
*Air dry or use a diffuser with your blowdryer.
*Don't touch your hair while it’s drying.
For specific products for your hair type you might want to explore the forums at:
http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/
There you can find others with the same hair type and try out some of their favorite products. So that’s really useful.
Lastly, it has made my hair so much better since I started the curly girl method! I used to almost never wear it down (it was a frizz/poof ball), but now I have pretty, shiny curls. ~:) It’s pretty radical—no sulfates (shampoo) or silicones—but it’s so great for curly hair. Give it a shot and check it out:

It's all natural!
the tag is "the people of beautiful hair" very true!
the "restorative" product is perfect for at home treatment for frizzy hair
Both could have negative effects of drying your hair out so it becomes extremely over time. Without proper conditioning or treatment this could lead to hair breakages at the roots, basically your hair could break off as soon as it started to grow. I think with the brittle hair it could become even MORE frizzy....
i personally wouldn't take either...and would go with Japanese straightening, it does the same thing only much better and it doesn't kill your hair. But its your opinion.
Can chemical straightening permanently damage your hair?
I had my hair chemically straightened about 4 months ago. Since then it's been completely cut off and I have my old hair back. Except my grown in hair is different than it was before it got straightened..It's now more course and curlier...It's even growing gray. Does chemical straightening have these effects on some people?
I had mine done last december and my hair has def changerd. I seem to get these grey patches, and it feels coarse. I also feel like when im washing it, it doesnt really feel wet, i can still feel how much drier my hair is
many people have warned me to do not do it at all and use iron instead.
however, friends of mine use chemical straightener and nothing happened to their hair.
so i guess it depends on the hair, the kind u use and the person who do it for u(some people are not really professional to do that)
Is permanent straightening for hair the same as chemical straightening?
I am a guy and have an appointment at a salon to have permanent straightening done to my wavy hair. I've seen many people ask about chemical straightening and it looks like it can be very damaging. Is permanent straightening considered chemical straightening and is it damaging to hair? Is this a good way to go to get rid of my wavy hair?
Not really permanent straightening is when they put a chemical on you hair, leave it there for about 30 minutes, wash and finally, use a very, very hot flatiron on hair. It last up to 3 to 4 months. i think the reason why they called it permanent straightening is because that is the only way to straightening and also last longer. Also, it worth so much, maybe about between 1500 to 3000 dollar depending on lenght and the kind of texture hair you have.
Chemical straightening or you should say relaxing, is a white creamy looking cream that the stylist put on your hair.Leave it there for about 10mins to 30mins (depending on hair texture) and youll feel this pain on your head....like pins and needles! that means that the product is working. when the stylist think you are ready, she'll wash your hair and do the rest of the procedures(shampoo, condition, rollers, etc) This is the cheapest way to chemically straighten your hair. YES chemical straighten do damaged your hair BUT that is for people who dont care about there hair....you need to mosturize it everyday, even in the summer(damage season) .
So in conclusion to your answer, YES but both ways may get damaged but you need to care for your hair as you care for yourself. But here is a tip for you......ask your stylist to straighten it alittle.....straightening it 100% may look weird.JUST ALITTLE!
GOOD LUCK,MAN!
Chemical straightening - what type of straightening is best?
I want to get my hair chemically straightened. What types of chemical straightening are available and which is the best one. What type of chemical straightening will give me the best result? I definitely don't want to get cheap, tacky straightening done.
Which hairdressers can I get it done?
I live in Sydney by the way so if you could just tell me the type of straightening that is best if you don't live in Sydney and can't recommend a hairdresser.

I wanna get my curly hair completely straight, Can I do a Chemical Straightening if I've done bleach before?
I feel my curls are too much work to style, so I want a chemical straightening. BUT I HAVE BLEACHED MY HAIR BEFORE. I DYED IT RED LAST MONTH. I LIKE HAVING MY HAIR BLONDE BUT BLEACH AND RELAXER ARE A DANGEROUS COMBINATION. What should I do? I WILL GET A PROFESSIONAL!
CAROLYN: YOU ADVICE IS GOOD BUT I WANNA STRAIGHTEN MY HAIR FOR ME. I THINK ITS TOO MUCH WORK. I MAYBE PANSEXUAL BUT I'M MORE INTERESTED IN FEMALES (BORN & TRANS).
I HEARD OF JAPANESE HAIR STRAIGHTENING CAN I DO THAT?
I have bleached hair which I straighten with my hair straightner usually every 2nd day. If I leave it natural, it looks frizzy and unstyled. I have spoken to 2 different hairdressers, one said there is no way she would touch my hair due to it being bleached. The other hairdresser said she would do it, but the results would,nt be as effective due to having bleached hair. She says my hair would be straight but it would be frizzy still. So I would still need to use my hair straightner to eliminate the frizz or use a strong hair serum to tame it down. Im still thinking If I should get it done or not. Anyway - good luck!
What is the best chemical to use for the Japanese Hair Straightening?
I found a very reputable salon by me for the straightening and they offer liscio and chi straightening chemicals...which is better?
Hi there - Go for the Liscio. It is by far the best. The ranking order for Japanese Hair Straightening is:
1.) Lisco
2.) Yuko
3.) Bio-Ionic / Chi
just Google Liscio Hair Straightening and you will get lots of results which tell you the same thing. The Liscio offers 9 different formulas in their line, so the stylist should always have one for your hair type (unless your hair is really damaged). Hope this helps!! Let me know how it works out.
Is it better to do japanese straightening or the chemical straightening that's meant for black people?
I am caucasian, blond long hair-- UNMANAGEABLE!! i want to get it chemically straightened but is japanese straightening the same thing as the black people one or is it like two different things? which is better?
No. Japanese Straightening is meant for people with finer hair. It might make a black person's hair extremely dry and more damaged than a relaxer would. That's why its not recommended for my hair type. If you want to take some of the curl out, go for a relaxer (your hair will still be a little wavy), but if you want it bone straight, then go with the Japanese thingy, but its very expensive and you have to get your new growth done every 6 months or so to keep it straight.

My tale of chemical straightening
So, as you girls know I've been wanting to get my hair chemical straighted for sometime. I got an e-mail from a salon I've gone to a few times and they were having a spa week with some specials and that included hair straightening for $50! Sounded good to me. I nervously drove 50 minutes in the snow to get there. The stylist didn't seem like she really knew what she was doing. She kept saying "I hope this is working, I hope this working. The ends are starting to curl."
So... here is how my professional chemical straightening came out... or didn't come out to be correct!
It's still curly/wavy and now it feels like straw!!!:( :(
She said it probably didn't take because I just had a baby and am nursing him so the hormones could play a factor in that. Would have been nice if she told me that before she put chemicals on my hair in vain.
EDIT- I did NOT pay for it! I would have been mad if I did because it nothing from my hair but dry it out! Thanks for your comments!!:)
