Women from shelters enjoy day at spa WTOC

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – Beyond all the buffing, polishing and outright pampering, they were working on a lot more than hair and nails at the Beauty Essentials Day Spa on Monday.

"We just want to build people's minds, their hearts, help them build up their self-esteem,'' spa owner Phyllis Russell said of her annual Twinkle of Hope, Caring Through Hands of Pampering event.

So for the sixth straight year, the Savannah spa invited women from three local shelters in for a day of beauty and a day for themselves.

"Oh, it's a luxury,'' said Jennifer Jones as she was getting a pedicure. "It's something I haven't done for myself in a very long time.''

"It's awesome,'' added Amanda Galvin while having a foot massage. "It's very enlightening and relaxing and it's just a great feeling.''

And creating a feeling of confidence for these women was as much the intention as creating a new look.

Special attention was being paid to their hands and feet. But Russell's real hope was to touch their hearts.

What is your favorite part of going to a day spa?

I am considering opening a day spa. What is your favorite part of going to a day spa? What things would you like to see at your local spa? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I really enjoy the couples massage with two masseuses. I gave one to my mom for Christmas. We were able to go into a room together, and chat while we were still nervous. As we relaxed, we were able to quit talking, but it was nice knowing that we were in there together. I loved the aroma therapy and hot oils. My mom is real shy and had never had a massage before. She loved it dearly and goes back now on her own. But, it is a great way for two people to spend a day together.

What do you think of an animal day spa at rescue centers?

Ok, so for our assignment, we hav eto propose something in an organization we pretend we are in. I want to be in an animal rescue organization and I want to propose an idea of having an animal day spa in the rescue center. Do you think that's a stupid idea? I can take your honest opinion. Also, if you do agree with me that this is a good idea, what are some ways to fund for the day spa and what advantages do you see in day spa? thanks!

I don't think pets need a day spa. I guarantee there are over a million better uses for money than a pet day spa. Especially if you are trying to make a difference in the world. Maybe you could start a spade/neutering program or a vaccination program. For money you could hit up private companies that deal with pets and local citizens. You could also seek grants or government funds. Even some type of adoption program to help find homes for the animals would be good.

After reading NewYorkGirl, maybe you could run a separate day spa to finance a program like I mentioned above. Charge people to bring their dogs in and then use that to help the animal rescue animals. It would be a win win situation.

They're great. I volunteered at an Animal Rescue facility and on the premises is a Doggy Gym and Day Spa, separate from the Animal Rescue facility.

Customers bring their dogs for the Day, or a few hours, some leave the dogs for the entire day, while their "human," is at work or running errands.

The "Doggy Day Spa," is private and not part of the Animal Rescue faclity.

You have to fund the Day Spa yourself.

What is the difference between a salon and a day spa?

Opening salon/day spa and need to know what constitutes a salon vs. day spa?services provided? I am going to have tanning/hair/mani./pedi.

Salon is for hair and nails... maybe waxing?

A day Spa is for massage and facials that usually require a licensed masseur and esthitician on premises. Not just some random hairdresser moonlighting...

what is the best day spa in Orlando Fla?

I plan to spend a day at the spa with 3 other women, ages 27-63. We need rest and relaxation from busy jobs and kids. Budget is a factor.

Absolutely, hands down it's the day spa at the Grand Floridian hotel that's part of Disney. It's right on Disney property. My mom is in love w/this place. I'm not sure of the prices but I recommend looking it up. Sorry, it's the only spa I know of

grand floridian-----i hear the one at the beach and yacht club is nice too~~~~~~~~~

There are quite a few spas on Disney property besides the Grand Floridian, which is the most expensive. There is one at Animal Kingdom Lodge, the Beach and Yacht Club, Saratoga Springs, and a few others. Check these web sites and see what you find. There is also a nice spa at some of the resorts there in Downtown Disney.

What kind of strategies would you use to market a hair salon & day spa?

If you were given the opportunity to market a hair salon & day spa who has a good reputation in your area, what would you do? Coupons, advertisement, free haircuts or visits to the day spa?

If you already have a good reputation, I wouldn't offer a discount. I feel that discounts and coupons can tend to make places look cheap or desperate. But there are many fun things you can do to attract more clientele, such as:

Create some fun packages/parties:

1. Girls Night In - plan/advertise a ladies night when you will serve wine/cheese, etc to all guests...encourage woman to bring friends and enjoy!

2. Charity night. Team up with a local charity and plan a "charity night" when you will donate a portion of the proceeds to the charity. Make sure that you send out a press release to all media outlets to promote this. Also, you may want to ask the charity to promote it.

3. Fund raising. Seek out local clubs which may be looking for fund raising ideas and offer them a gift certificate fund raiser.

4. Articles. Write an article pertaining to health and beauty. Make sure the last paragraph is "about the author" to ensure that you get your salon's name out there.

I am full of ideas...contact me if you would like more! My website is in the source list. I would be happy to help.

Good luck!

#1 Invent a catchy name
#2 Offer a service or product to make the spa different - Something that NOBODY else in the area offers.
#3 Price the services affordably but NOT too cheap. Determining the target market of a spa, the clientel obviously do not expect to get anything cheap. They will see it as"you get what you pay for"

How much does it cost to open up a day spa on average?

Im looking to open up a day spa....starting off small...with a few massage rooms and a couple facial rooms...Pedicure and manicure startion and eventually growin into a spa/ salon...any ideas of what the investment would be to get it started? Thanks.

Probably around $150,000.

What is the best day spa in the Bloomfield Hills, MI area?

A friend has done my family a tremendous favor and I would like to thank her with a gift certificate to a day spa. She lives in the Bloomfield Hills/Birmingham area north of Detroit and I am not familiar with the area. Cost is not a major concern. Suggestions would be appreciated.

The best spa in the area I think is Nordstrom's Spa at Somerset Mall (in Troy) it's about 5 min. away. If she's in the BH area she more than likely shops at Somerset anyway since that's the closest mall.

Other than that, there is the Truth spa in West Bloomfield on Orchard Lake Rd. (It's like 10 min away). That one is nice as well, but not as nice as the Nordstrom Spa.

Hope it helps.
