Turning up the heat in Copenhagen Sydney Morning Herald

You can always bet on short-term self-interest and the UN climate change conference is no exception. Marian Wilkinson reports.

'We are living on the frontline!'' Grenada's ambassador, Dessima Williams, almost shouted at the assembled media. ''A large number of our islands are already experiencing significant damage, some are already going under the sea and some are losing their water supply.''

For 30 minutes, the chairwoman of the Alliance of Small Island States epitomised the ''fierce urgency of now'', which is supposed to be driving this historic United Nations climate change conference in Copenhagen. From the opening day, speaker after speaker, including the chairwoman of the meeting, the Danish environment minister, Connie Hedegaard, have been exhorting the 15,000 participants, ''This is the time to deliver! This is the place to commit! Let's get it done!''

Inside the cavernous conference centre, hundreds of activists dressed in T-shirts demanding ''Climate Justice Now'' roam in packs, breaking into spontaneous chanting, sparking panic in nervous Danish security guards.

What do I do for growing out hair that is usually fade into a longer cut/style?

I have always had a clean cut fade look. But I've been growing it out for a shaggy look. Got it trimmed a few times. And a major trimmage for prom, last month. It's not too long right now. The start of the hair scap is at one inch, then as you go up, it's two inches, then finally the area at the top is three inches. My bangs are right above my eye browl.

I hear people saying that if you're growing it out, you need to get a layer and a thinning or something? What are those, by the way?

But, ultimately, my question is: since I've always had a fade, do I need to get my hair adjusted in anyway or something? Or do I just let it grow out to a certain lenght before getting layers and thinning? If so, what lenght?

How often do you think a fade cut should be trimmed up?

I was just wondering since I like to get mine cut weekly. I was wondering if i am weird or odd for this? I have come across people who think it is odd, but whenever I was with the military, we would get ours cut weekly and that seems "normal" with me. I like to get it faded from a 1.5 down. However, I have come across people that when you ask them to cut it weekly, complain or don't see why/kind of argue even though they are making money off of it.

My husband gets his cut weekly and he takes our son to get his cut weekly too. Now that my husband is in Iraq my 5 year old tells me "Mom take me to get my haircut it looks ugly". I guess it must be a military thing. I dunno but I will admit it's nice to have a clean cut hubby and son ;)

Is this the most pressing question you could come up with? Just go in every week and don't worry about it.

How many times are you going to ask this today?

I get mine cut every week whether I need it or not. The longest I have gone is 2 weeks and that is because I just was extremely busy. Does not really matter what anybody else thinks your the one paying for it not them.

How do you cut a fade?

I am going to cut my own hair soon and i want to cut myself a fade. I need help!

Check out Barberdvd.com but the info below came from hairfinder

A “fade” is a gradual increasing or decreasing in the length of the hair, and is specifically used in very short hairstyles. Generally, a fade haircut is worn by men, but the technique is also used in some women’s styles.

Many stylists and barbers use length guards of decreasing depth to slowly graduate the length of the hair. Once they’ve reached the shortest length attainable with a guard, they may use the adjustable guide plate of the clippers themselves. There is also the clippers-over-comb technique, where the stylist/barber uses a barbering comb (denoted by a wider end and a tapered end which has very finely spaced and short teeth) to create the tapering effect.

With practice, some barbers and stylists can reach a level of proficiency where they can create a fade taper freehand, but most still use a barbering comb to prevent errors. For the shortest portions of the taper, the comb is laid against the scalp to create an angle and the clippers are glided across the comb to remove the hairs following this angle.
The fade is most easily created on coarse, wiry, and thick hair, because this hair has more structure and stands out more prominently from the scalp. Fine, soft or thin hair is the most difficult hair with which to create a fade because it bends so easily, even at the shortest of lengths. Fine and thin hair rarely looks flattering when cut with such severe tapering anyway, so this is usually not an issue.

The fade is not a hairstyle that can be created by an individual on himself. And if you are interested in practicing the techniques to create a fade hairstyle, you need either willing subjects who won’t be upset by errors, or you can contact your local cosmetology schools to see if any of the students have used manikins with hair that is too short to use for their classwork any longer. Some of the students will be willing to simply give you these manikins, and at the very least you should be able to purchase them for a very low price compared to the cost of a new manikin from a beauty supply store.

There might be some instructions at www.nappturality.com. Sorry I can't help you more.

How to cover up/fade away cut marks?

I cut myself last night, but now regret it as my arms bruised and i have red lines all over my wrist. Any solutions to covering it up, or getting rid of it before anyone notices?

Psych Major/cutter 14 years
The Key is cleaning the wound right after you are finished. Cleaning will keep some of the redness away. You will still have marks, and scars that will last for decades. A rule of thumb: the deeper the cut, the deeper the scar, the longer it takes to heal. Keep your implements clean! Rubbing alcohol works well. You should also clean the spot of skin before you start. I use strong rubbing alcohol, sometimes just rubbing that on my skin helps with the sensation, and then I don’t need to cut.

Covering up…
Clothing is a natural covering, unless you’re wearing long sleeves at the beach. Jewelry works well, try bulky stylish bracelets, or make your own to fit where you need it. Foundation can cover the scab; just blend it in well to match the area. I recommend latex FX skin, Match it as closely to your skin tone as you can. Don’t over do! The key is to not draw attention. Let dry well then use make up to make it look natural to that area of skin.

Long Term treatment of scars…
Scars can be treated with over the counter creams, and vit. E. Let the scared skin get some sunlight. The sun and Vit E helped to heal my physical scars. The emotional scars are another story. You may not realize this in the infancy of the injury, but in years, those scars will remain. Reminding you every day of cutting. Other people who don’t understand will also criticize you, be ready to have a reliable excuse, or a way to hide the scars during interviews etc… “It was my cat” is an inside joke among self injurers. I have herd too many excuses that did not fit either. “My toaster exploded with my toaster strudel “Also did not fit the multiple vertical cuts across my best friends arm when we first meet 10 years ago. But it opened us up to a great friendship and support from one another.

This habit can quickly turn in to a necessity. Self Injury is addictive, bleeding causes chemicals in your brain (opiates) to be released. Those chemicals calm and relax, lift your mood, help you sleep, and can bring on a dissociate state. Quitting for some takes years. Beware of not cutting too deep! Cutting can cause serious injury! And even KILL you, if you’re not careful. Be shore you know basic first aid and where to go to get medical help if you need it.

Alternatives include holding ice, snapping rubber bands on the wrist, exercise, etc… Find what works for you…I run really fast and hard on mountain trails until I am exhausted, lift weights until I tire my self out etc… find alternatives to help you get threw the “needing to cut stages”.
I also recommend giving blood. It’s like cutting but it is for a good cause, and you get that wonderful felling of the opiates racing threw your brain.

Talk to someone, please! You are not alone. There are many of us out there who care, and are willing to talk. Speak with a Dr. or a Therapist; they can help you figure out why you cut. Cutting is a symptom of a deeper problem. There is an underlying cause that needs to be dealt with. Self punishment? Control issues? The calming effect?... And why?
Good luck and take care,

just cut off your arms

Maybe long sleeves

Get a girl friend to help you get rid of the reason for making the marks

To remove them is something you will have to live with and hopefully solve the reason for it and you know what that is (No one cares) You think

I know you don't have one so get out and find any one and don't go by what they alway look like

WHY do you cut yourself????? I am so confused by this!
You need to get some Vitiman E lotions it lightens scars. But please stop cutting your self!

Try vitamin E oil from the chemist, this should reduce the bruising and redness.
Get help sweets...seriously get help...call your dr and ask for a referral.

okay, the first sol. is stop being stupid(no offense, brad)...you dont need to do that!

then i know a product that will fade scars.....sebo de macho....i dont know if it is available there in your place....but thats what i know...

hope i helped somehow

Certainly any triple antibiotic cream or ointment will help you to heal more quickly, but it is more important to take care of your depression. Depression is the most common problem that leads people to cut or self-mutilate.

See a counselor right away! The longer you wait, the longer it will take to heal the inside which is what is making you cut up the outside!

You can buy vitamin E capsules, which are liquid filled capsules, poke a pin into it and spread the liquid on the cuts. I met lots of girls in psych hospitals who were told to do this after they cut themselves and my surgeon had me do this when I got an operation on my face. It is over the counter.

good make up should do it but be careful not to get it wet while anyones around or it may be more noticable.

Please stop cutting yourself, its pointless because it solves nothing and a hassle when you have to cover it up

There are lot of products such as vitamin E cream and stuff that will aid in the healing process. However, none of these products will make it disapear over night.

Your only option short term is to cover them, long sleeves, wrist bands etc. I would still recommend the cream etc as it will help them heal faster and better.

Now I have answered your question. I would like to recommend you making an appointment with a counselor or a doctor. Both of these can assist you in helping you to deal with the feelings, emotions, (depresssion) that make you want do this to yourself.

Neosporin or something, the commercials says helps reduce scars, and I think it'd help best while the wound is still open, instead of applying it after scarring. Scars eventually fade though. I was scratched by my cat and it left three long, curved scars on my arm. That was a couple years ago, and now the ends of the scars are starting to fade and get shorter. I expect a thin, fine cut like a razor would fade faster then the wider cat scratch. In the meantime, wear long sleeves, or maybe start wearing a wide bracelet, like emo. Those are usually wider and you can tighten them around the scars. Or use a watch if they're close to the wrist.

Dag that's hella cheap...at least to me...my lil cousins are 7 and 8...i think their haircuts are like 20...something like that...but it also depends on the barber...lol my aunt wanted to be cheap and her son ended up with a mohawk like diddy...

is a blowout/tape up/brooklyn fade hair cut always spiked up or can be worn with a messy look?

i really like this hairstyle and want to get it, but i dont want to have to spike my hair everyday. does it look good if you put wax or shaping cream in it and wear it kind of messy?

anyone who has this haircut, i would appreciate you're help.

Ive had that haircut for a year now and i understand how frustrating it is to have to spike it everyday! If you want to have a messy kind of look on it just put hair gel on and mess it up because it will stay still. If you use wax it can move around and get messed up. It does look good, but it also depends on your hair kind.

Easy and Free(or trial) Software to cut/fade/mix music.?

I am doing a solo for a dance competition and I need to cut certain parts of the song and mix them together( the songs reg about 4:21 and I wanted to take bits of it and make it into 1:25) I also would like to fade the ending or where its going into another part. Could anyone please give me a software to do this on. I will only use the software once or twice...so a trial version will work fine. Thanks for your help!

Audacity is a completely free editor, and it's pretty good.
