Did You Hear the One About the Illinois Primary…? Salon (blog)

Everyone thought that the whole Gov. Rod Blagojevich madness showed the insanity of Illinois politics.

Everyone, it should be noted, except people from Illinois.

Those of us from Illinois know better.  Madness?  Oh, tosh, that wasn't madness.  It was business as usual.  Illinois politics has been a popular form of entertainment before even turn-of-the-century alderman Bathhouse John Coughlin and Hinky Dink Kenna ran the First Ward.  (Their annual ball was a major political fundraiser that made Mardi Gras look like a cotillion.  Its mingling attendees were gamblers, prostitutes, local businessmen, the local mob and politicians, and it filled the Chicago Coliseum.)

Rod Blagojevich was a rank amateur for Illinois politics.  Just take a look at what happened in last Tuesday's state primary.  When friends would come to me all outraged by Mr. Blagojevich, I just shrugged and smiled benignly at their over-reaction.  I mean,

Where can I find a salon/spa in the Orlando area that uses hard wax for brazilian waxing?

I'm looking for a spa or salon that is actually run by Brazilians that use the hard wax.

I asked this a while back and got a great contact. I go to this place regularly, its worth driving. Its called MM Salon, but its right off I-drive (6504 Carrier Dr). They team is all Brazilian, but super nice, prices are VERY good too, i think starts at $30 for full brazilian wax. Their number is 407.345-9110. Good luck!

Pia Esthetics. Go to bypia.com to get directions to the winter park location. excellent service and waxing experts!

What is the thing you like the most about the salon/spa you use and what would you improve?

I'm in the process of opening a salon/spa and i'd like to know what people are looking for when they go to a spa/salon besides looking and feeling great! I'd also like to hear from any business owners if they have any input as well.

Thank you so much

i love when they use the avacado stuff during pedicures., and dead sea salts.
&&
i dont like when they rush whatever they are doing, for their customer.

i hate when they shampoo your hair and it digs in your neck, so try and pad behind the neck

i love it when my pedicurist uses a hot towel on my feet

make sure your employees have plenty to talk about with the customer

What should i expect at an interview for a receptionist at a spa/salon?

What questions should i expect to answer at an interview at a spa and salon for a receptionist? What should i bring with me? Any tips?

I worked as a receptionist for a salon/spa for over four years. First things first, just remember that above all, be professional. Dress appropriately, make sure your hair and makeup are tasteful, etc.

As for questions, they will most likely ask you standard interview questions plus questions that pertain to a hair salon. Do you have any experience with customer service and handling multi line phones? Cash register or money handling experience? Are you able to multi task? Do you mind assisting when needed? Can you operate a computer? What types of software?

Those are some of the questions they could ask you. They may ask if you wouldn't mind helping out if needed (sweeping up hair, stocking shelves, tidying up the reception area). You should show them that you are friendly and outgoing as receptionists are the gateway to most businesses. They are the "first impression" of most businesses.

I hope this helps some. Good Luck!

What is the difference between a salon and a day spa?

Opening salon/day spa and need to know what constitutes a salon vs. day spa?services provided? I am going to have tanning/hair/mani./pedi.

Salon is for hair and nails... maybe waxing?

A day Spa is for massage and facials that usually require a licensed masseur and esthitician on premises. Not just some random hairdresser moonlighting...

How do I find a clean nail salon or spa in my area?

I am wondering what's the best way to search for a cleal nail salon or spa. I have just recently gotton over a fungal nail infection that i believe is the result of unsanitary practices(not cleaning the equiptment) in a salon. After taking the medication it takes about 6-8 months for a nail to grow. As you can imagine I want to take all possible steps to avoid this again.

To minimize the risk of another infection, You can check with the state board of cosmetology to see if there are any complaints against an establishment. You may also check with the Better Business Bureau. Often you can run these checks online. To insure you're safe, make sure your salon follows the following procedures and inspect everything prior to your service. Here are a few safe guards that can help you in the future. Prior to your visit go to the salon and briefly meet the nail tech and ask questions about safety and sanitation. They should have all implements kept in a proper sanitation solution. Clean equipment should be kept separate from used equipment and should not just taken out of a drawer. Ask if you can supply your own equipment if they do not have disposable single use equipment. Observe how they clean the pedicure chairs between uses. It should not be just a wipe out with a spray. The disinfectant must be run through the jet system.

In addition, Review the following key points:

As previously discussed, bring Your Own Tools to the Salon. It is a Spavelous idea to purchase your own nail tools, both steel instruments (make sure that you keep them clean and sanitized) and non-metal tools like pedi stones and pedi files.

Have your cuticles pushed back not cut. Your cuticles naturally protect your nail bed from bacteria. It is best that cuticles are pushed back with an orange stick with its tip covered in a piece of cotton. Orange Sticks should be disposed of after each use. They should not be sharpened and used on another guest.

Do not allow credo blades, razors, callus graters and cuticle cutters to be used during a visit. These implements can cut skin allowing bacteria to enter.

Inspect the Salon. Look around the salon. If there are signs of lack of cleanliness like dust, debris or nail clippings on the floor ,that's a warning sign that cleanliness is not important to them. Check for the salon's license, which should be posted on the wall along with the technician's licenses.

Inspect Sterilization Techniques. Many salons use UV sterilizers, they are a small white electrical box with a lamp inside, to sterilize tools. These do not kill bacteria. The best way to sterilize tools is with an autoclave or disinfectant labeled "tuberculocidal." Disinfectant is the turquoise-colored water in glasses . They should have these at every station and put metal implements in it between use. If you're really concerned about sterilization, ask to see the bottle the disinfectant comes in and make sure it's properly labeled. To locate spas in your area check www.spavelous.com

go look around ask questions on things 2 prevent fungus and how they do there things ;] =]]

Word of mouth is one of your best bets. Also, it depends where you live, big cities usually have internet resources. Try googling "salon reviews" and your city to see what you can find. I believe that CitySearch also has a section that has reviews on salons and spas.

Good luck!

Maybe just by asking before the service.

Autoclave can help after hour but not during quick change in service because of time consumption while tuberculocidal bleach is range at least 10 minutes to kill bloodborn and pathogen bacteria.

Germicide ultraviolet light, purple color, can destroy DNA of virus as fast as within .25-10 seconds depending on power of rays output, but it maybe require a qualified engineer service to inspect the output effectiveness of UV lights on routine. Sensors and inspection microsope are a must.

Hot glass beads sterilizers with 217-250C are also simple but sure device to eliminate microorganism and convenient for small tools with quick change in service.

Good luck.

What kind of strategies would you use to market a hair salon & day spa?

If you were given the opportunity to market a hair salon & day spa who has a good reputation in your area, what would you do? Coupons, advertisement, free haircuts or visits to the day spa?

If you already have a good reputation, I wouldn't offer a discount. I feel that discounts and coupons can tend to make places look cheap or desperate. But there are many fun things you can do to attract more clientele, such as:

Create some fun packages/parties:

1. Girls Night In - plan/advertise a ladies night when you will serve wine/cheese, etc to all guests...encourage woman to bring friends and enjoy!

2. Charity night. Team up with a local charity and plan a "charity night" when you will donate a portion of the proceeds to the charity. Make sure that you send out a press release to all media outlets to promote this. Also, you may want to ask the charity to promote it.

3. Fund raising. Seek out local clubs which may be looking for fund raising ideas and offer them a gift certificate fund raiser.

4. Articles. Write an article pertaining to health and beauty. Make sure the last paragraph is "about the author" to ensure that you get your salon's name out there.

I am full of ideas...contact me if you would like more! My website is in the source list. I would be happy to help.

Good luck!

#1 Invent a catchy name
#2 Offer a service or product to make the spa different - Something that NOBODY else in the area offers.
#3 Price the services affordably but NOT too cheap. Determining the target market of a spa, the clientel obviously do not expect to get anything cheap. They will see it as"you get what you pay for"

Is there really a difference getting your nails done at a Salon/Spa vs. one of those cheap Nail places?

Besides the price?? it is $30.00 to get a full set of nails at one of those cheap-e nail places .. and it is $71.00 at the local salon/spa for a full set .. is it worth paying $41.00 more? what is the difference????????????
thanks!

i have gone to both and i found they do the same work...the less expensive shop actually give you more of a design spectrum

Do you own a salon or spa if so, are you open carrying new products.?

I am in the process of creating an awesome skin care line. I am contemplating whether I should approach salons/spas to carry my product. Are most salon owners open minded to try new things?

I dont own a spa but I export beauty products to latin america I would be interested in seeing what your product is what things do you offer. What is the price, how many units you have, where is the product, I am based out of miami. Email me at aae@wilanda.net I am always interested in new merchandise.

What should we name our full service salon and spa?

A friend and I are planning To open a full service salon and spa.
Both of us have different ethnic backgrounds that we are very proud of.
We are also tired of color lines that continuelly curse the beauty business.
Both of us specialize in color/highlights, locs and natural hair.
We have something in mind but we wonder what you may think of that sums us all up.
